Spring is approaching and everyone, from the State Champion Nueva Cross Country runners to the sprinter newcomers, are lacing up their spikes and hitting the track.
Over the past couple weeks, the track team has hit the ground running with a whopping four meets, over 20 personal records, and four new school records.
Coached by Coach Gilkey of Nueva cross country fame as well as Nueva’s own Science of Mind teacher and former collegiate track champ Jake Fauver, the track team has been running hard since February to get ready for living in the fast-lane.

The season started off with a bang on March 4th with Nueva being the first ever Division Five school to host its own track meet at the CSM track and field complex. In competition with seven schools represented by just under 200 athletes, Nueva swept the Girls 4×800 Relay, the 800 and the Mile, while Jake L. snagged a victory in the 3200 and numerous personal records were broken by the freshmen runners. A handful of runners had already participated in track running at Sunset Invitational the day before, and Nueva did not disappoint.
The following week, with the majority of the team at the King’s Academy Sprint/Distance Carnival and a select few running the 3200m at K-Bell Invitational, over 20 personal records were set, and both the girls and boys freshman school record in the 400m were broken.

Just four days later, Nueva runners bared the heat at Sacred Heart Prep when both the girls and boys 4x400m relay teams out-sprinted the rest of the competition at the first WBAL League Meet. Senior Maddy T. single-handedly won not only long jump but also set a school record in the 100m hurdles.
Already the Nueva track team seems to be smashing every expectation and, for the first time in the school’s history, can look past the league meets to the CSS and states meets at the end of the spring semester.

The team will be spiking up again this weekend on March 18th at the San Francisco School of the Arts Big Cat Relays and may, in the coming weeks, have individual runners qualify for major varsity meets such as Stanford Invitational and the Adidas Distance Meet of Champions in Los Angeles.
